Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Educational Programs & Workshops

Why is this called “Mindful Shifts”?

These educational programs are designed to enhance the well-being of its participants, primarily by teaching concepts and tools that lead to becoming more mindful of one’s inner-dialogue (thoughts) and habitual responses (emotions & behaviors) to life’s various and ever-changing circumstances. By becoming more aware of our responses that are unhelpful and often harmful in our lives, we create an opening to replace them with more balanced, positive and rational ones. This brings about the shifts or personal transitions that we are seeking.

What are the presenter’s credentials and experiences?

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, with a bachelor’s in sociology and master’s in counseling from the University of North Texas, as well as additional graduate work within the field of counseling psychology.  I have acquired a broad understanding of psychological development and vast teaching competencies, through my 20-year experience as full-time professor in the field. During that same period of my career, formally and informally, I have been read, studied and applied various approaches and teachings within the area of psychological health and personal transformation, derived from both western and eastern traditions and sciences. In 2015, I completed a two-year intensive program, called the Living School for Action and Contemplation, founded by renowned spiritual teacher Richard Rohr. I have also been a student of Tara Brach and Jack Kornfield, respected psychologists and mindfulness teachers. Recently, I have co-presented, on the topics of well-being and mindfulness, at professional conferences, mental health facilities and a corporate setting. I am currently studying the fundamentals of Positive Psychology through a certificate course offered at Stanford University.

How long are the educational programs?

The length of the educational programs can range from a 90-minute workshop, to a full-day (6-hour) program, to an entire program series (6 weeks or longer), depending on the needs of the client organization.

Are the workshops similar to group counseling?

No.  Although I am a professional counselor, the work with which I am currently involved is more similar to coaching, rather than counseling. The difference between these professions will be further explained at the beginning of the workshop series.

From where has the material being presented been gathered and studied?

Much of what will be shared and employed in the workshops is derived from positive psychology, humanistic psychology, cognitive psychology and neuroscientific (brain) research, as well as from spiritual teachings and practices of various traditions.

Since the workshops may include some spiritual subject matter, is it from one particular religion?

No.  These workshops are not essentially founded on religion-specific principles but the material may often overlap with one’s own spiritual journey. Participants will be asked to refrain from any type of evangelism or theological disputes during the workshops.  Instead (and if applicable), they will be encouraged to dive deeper into their own particular tradition or experience, whether or not it is associated with a certain faith.

If I am not a “spiritual” person, can I still benefit from attending?

Yes.  Almost all of the approaches and practices that are presented will be from secular sources, within psychological sciences.  Participants can individually decide on the extent to which what is being presented intersects with their spiritual life.

Are these workshops primarily designed to teach us to meditate formally?

No.  While formal meditative practices are always encouraged as a means to live more mindfully, meditation training is not the main intent of these workshops.  Rather, various practices and techniques will be presented so that each participant can identify those that best fit their personality and lifestyle.  Brief, guided meditations may be led, depending on the wishes of the client(s).

Will there be “homework” to do in between workshops?

Yes.  In order to benefit the most from what will be presented, participants will be greatly encouraged to practice on their own, in between workshops.  Handouts and exercises will be distributed to help guide this process.  Each participant will decide how much time they want to devote to these. The more participants engage with and apply the teachings, the more they will benefit from the program.

Are these programs for all ages?

Not yet.  Eventually, I will be creating workshops for all ages, including for children. For programming related to adolescents transitioning into adulthood, please refer to the “Well-Being Programs” tab at the top of this page and scroll down to the section titled, “Life Stage Transition Workshops”  The topics and practices presented through all of the other programming will be most relevant for adults.

How do I request a single workshop or a longer program series, or ask additional questions not listed above?
